Summary
FPD International 2007 was held October 24-26, 2007, in Pacifico Yokohama, Japan. At this international show, the latest LCD, PDP, organic EL, and electronic paper displays were demonstrated, from all over the world including Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Also, a wide range of companies that support manufacturing of FPDs, such as components, manufacturing and inspection equipment displayed their wares. The biggest difference between this year’s show and previous years was the concentrated emphasis on the advancement of technology and cost reduction, instead of the product size and line generation. This shows indicates future trends will be mainly focused on: Thickness, power saving, cost down Efficiency improvements: faster response time, higher contrast ratio and higher resolution New technologies: multi-touch panels Innovation: 3D, AMOLED, Plastic LCD The report includes representative products of each exhibitor companies.

Summary
Highlights by technology LCD panels with capacitive, optical and resistive film-type touch sensors were exhibited at the show. TMD, Sharp and LG Philips showed optical designs. AUO and Samsung Electronics offered capacitive and resistive film designs. Technology to form photodiodes on TFT arrays, which can be used for more than just touch panel functionality, was demonstrated. Photodiodes were also used to automatically adjust organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays and for LCD panel backlight output in response to changes in ambient light. LCD panels equipped with a built-in touch sensor drew people's attention at FPD International 2007. While the technology itself is being used commercially, technical development has been intensifying because the improvement of user interfaces using touch sensors is regarded as an important factor in device development. Highlights by makers AUO, Epson and Samsung Electronics provide this functionality in transmissive LCD panels, with photodiodes formed over the TFT array adjusting backlight output in response to the level of ambient brightness. Sharp combines photodiodes with a semi-transmissive LCD panel for lower power consumption. Its 4” semi-transmissive LCD panel boosts the backlight to improve readability in low-light environments in the same way as a transmissive panel does. In sunlight and other bright environments of about 100K lux, the backlight output is reduced, because the panel is fully readable in the reflective mode. As a result, power consumption is only about half that of conventional LCD panels. CMO also combines a semitransmissive panel in a similar fashion for power savings.

For advanced mobile technology, AUO unveiled integrated multi-touch technology, 3D dual view technology, ASPD*-mobile technology for motion blur reduction, AMVA*-mobile for ultra high contrast ratios of up to 6,000:1, and VGA high resolution with high brightness and high color technology. AUO – HiColor Technology
AUO developed a new generation of HiColor technology for displaying multiple primary colors using yellow and cyan in addition to RGB. It utilizes the latest LED backlights to improve color gamut and transmittance. The latest LED backlight technology replaced the conventional two-peak LED with a three-peak LED. The light of the three-peak LED backlight passes through the panel, improving color gamut and transmittance and providing a better image quality. Color saturation is 100% NTSC on a 2.4” VGA transflective mobile phone display.

AUO – 2D/3D Technology
The panel displays both 2D and 3D images in two directions at the same time. With this dual-image function, in the automobile application, the passenger can enjoy playing 3D games while the driver only sees the navigation screen.

AUO – 2.8” WQVGA with Built-in Light Sensor
A variety of AUO's proprietary LCD panel technology for mobile devices has also been used to manufacture a 2.4” VGA panel with a 3500:1 contrast ratio, 450 cd/m2 luminance, and 100% NTSC and a 2.8” panel with a built-in light sensor, which enables the panel to reduce power consumption by up to 50% power by adjusting the luminance in accordance with the ambient light intensity.

AUO – MIPI Technology for Smart Phone Panels
The 2.2” panel is used for mobile devices equipped with MIPI (mobile industry processor interface), which provides a high-speed data transfer capability and an effective power management system. Its fast transmission and large bandwidth bring superior quality display into high resolution panels. The interface is being developed as the platform for smart phones, etc.

AUO – APE Technology
AUO Picture enhancement (APE)-mobile technology contains both image processing and adaptive backlight control. Ambient backlight recognition helps to conserve backlight power and elevate the image at the same time. By calculating the image content, APE-mobile technology fits a dynamic gamma curve to enlarge the gray level difference, so as to enhance the image contrast. In addition, the image based backlight control signal can be transferred to backlight modulation simultaneously. The backlight controller integrates the information from the image processor core and the ambient light sensor, providing an elaborate PWM (power management) signal that can significantly reduce system power and maintain image luminance.

AUO – In-Cell Multi-Touch Panel
AUO exhibited two newly-launched 4.3” multi-touch panel technologies with in-cell design, integrating multi-touch touch function features into the TFT-LCD manufacturing process without adding additional glass and to retain a thickness of 2.2 mm; thinner than conventional touch panel applications. The product does not require calibration, unlike other existing panels of this kind. Furthermore, the latest panel simultaneously detects multiple touch points so that motion and actions can be interpreted. The panel can provide a wide color gamut and a good readability when used outdoors due to the high surface smoothness. Volume production is planned for 2008.

AUO also highlighted the world’s thinnest reported 1.9” mobile TFT-LCD at 0.69 mm, with a weight of 2.2 grams and 400 nit brightness. CMO – MultiPrimary Technology
MultiPrimary technology uses two sets of RGB LED light sources. One is a standard light source used in LED backlights, which covers 88% of the NTSC color gamut. The other is an RGB LED light source that uses LEDs with G and B color properties in the chromaticity diagram that are different from those of the LEDs used in the first set. The latter set covers 65% of the NTSC color gamut, complementing the color space corresponding to cyan, as the first set only has a small representation area of cyan. The total gamut of the both sets reaches 102% NTSC. Meanwhile, the properties of R color light sources in both sets are identical. Filters for three colors, namely R, G and B, are employed in the technology. In order to reproduce vivid colors, there is another technique that uses five filters, i.e., Y (yellow) and C (cyan) filters in addition to those for RGB.

CMO – MultiPrimary Technology
According to MultiPrimary technology, image data at 120 Hz frame rate is displayed by alternatively turning on the two sets of light sources. When the first set is turned on, the panel is driven to display image data obtained by eliminating the color corresponding to cyan from the normal image data. When the second set is turned on, the panel is driven to display image data of cyan alone. The OCB (Optically Compensated Bend) display mode, which has a shorter gray-level response time, is employed as the panel display method. Considering the purpose of the second set, the R light source seems unnecessary. If the color space corresponding to Y or M (magenta) must be complemented in the future, the company may employ an R light source with properties different from that of its counterpart used in the first set.

CPT – Capacitive Touch Panel
Handsets, UMPCs (ultra mobile PC) as well as GPS devices are the main drivers of the touch screen panel market. In the production of capacitive touch screen panels, adhering the capacitive sensor element onto a glass layer above the LCD panel requires a relatively lower technological entry barrier. CPT is planning to introduce related products using this type of process. In more advanced production methods, the touch sensitive components are integrated into the LCD panel, according to CPT.

CPT – Color Filter-Less Display
Applying field-sequential functionalities to LED lighting performance, Color Filters are no longer necessary. The CFL (Color Filter-Less) module has high transmittance and reduces the module manufacturing prime cost. The lower the pixel density, the higher the pixel aperture ratio, which means that manufacturing yield will increase and power consumption will decrease. OCB (Optically Compensated Bend) type panels have quick response time and wide viewing angle. By applying field-sequential capability, the LED lighting performance is higher, and the color saturation and color expression characteristics are better.

E Ink Product Summary
Founded in 1997 based on research started at the MIT Media Lab, E Ink Corporation is the key supplier of electronic paper display (EPD) technologies. E Ink aims to apply their products for many consumer and industrial applications spanning handheld devices, watches, clocks and public information and promotional signs. Future technology developments will enable many new applications through ultra-thin, lightweight, rugged, flexible, full-color displays. Three products attracted people’s eyes at the show: a front light for electronic paper, a wristwatch with an e-paper face and e-paper integrated with a flexible TFT substrate. E-paper is a reflective display. E Ink's front light, which has a structure similar to the front light used in LCD panels, is designed to tackle the problem of visibility in low light. The wristwatch with an e-paper face was reportedly developed by Art Tech, a US-Hong Kong joint venture. The entire watch dial is an E Ink Vizplex e-paper display that allows the owner to select among styles, from full numerals and indices to no markings all. The product was released in December 2007. The e-paper integrated with a flexible TFT substrate is a 9.7” display featuring a resolution of 1200 x 820. The substrate was manufactured by Prime View International Co Ltd of Taiwan. The flexibility is provided by forming the TFT on polyimide. E Ink is promoting the development of flexible active-matrix e-paper by combining it with the flexible TFT substrates developed by several manufacturers including LPL, Plastic Logic, and Prime View International. The products equipped with these substrates will all be available for mass shipment in 2008. Therefore, active-matrix e-paper is expected to flood the market in 2008.

Products Summary
Epson showcased a wide range of small- and medium-sized liquid crystal displays, including wide-viewingangle LCDs, slim heavy-duty modules, and low-power-consumption modules that optimize backlight brightness to match the displayed image and surrounding light conditions. The exhibit also features 0.74" transmissive high-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT LCD panels with full HD (1080p) resolution; slim, lightweight displays for use as electronic paper, produced by forming a TFT on a plastic substrate; and bangle-type wristwatches that went on sale in August ’07 as an example of the application of segment display technology. An OLED display boasting a contrast ratio of over 10,000:1 was presented as a concept exhibit. Three applications of this system demonstrated: a next-generation car dashboard display system, a retail advertising video display system, and a monitor for living room use.

Epson – “Ultimate Black”
The light emitting capabilities of AMOLED displays make possible such features as high contrast, wide viewing angles, and fast response times. In addition, the display can be made very thin and lightweight. To realize the high-quality representation of textures, Epson is working on achieving "ultimate black" because black holds the key to overall image quality. The problems of early stage brightness deterioration were the major obstacle to extending the life of the device, but were solved by improving the light-emitting materials and through the development of the company's own original element structure. As a result, the life of the device is lengthened to more than 50,000 hours, a level appropriate for practical application. Epson has already installed and commenced operations of a development and manufacturing line that is capable of small-scale production at its Fujimi Plant in Nagano prefecture, Japan.

Epson – Photo Fine Chromarich & Photo Fine Vistarich
Photo Fine Chromarich technology achieves more than 100% of the NTSC color gamut. It enables superior resolution and extended color range by matching four color filters (the standard RGB plus cyan arrangement) with a new white backlight. It is applied to high-end mobile phones and digital cameras and also to promote new applications for the displays. Photo Fine Vistarich enables extreme-viewing-angle of 90°. Available in sizes ranging from 2.4” to 10.1”, the displays are employed in any number of portable devices, from cell phones to PDAs to PMPs (Personal Media Players), although the best use we can think of is to put them on cameras, which should make it a lot easier to see what you're shooting when you need to take pictures over a crowd.

LPL – 2.4” QVGA
LPL has developed a-Si TFT-LCD mobile phone panel with the borders on the left and right sides measuring just 1 mm each. This is claimed to be about 50% thinner than most a-Si TFT-LCD panels currently produced, which generally have borders measuring closer to 2 mm. The display is developed based on Narrow Bezel Technology, combining Gate in Panel technology (GIP), which integrates the driver IC onto the LCD panel, and new process and material technologies designed to ensure that narrow-border panels are equal in quality and reliability to their wider counterparts. LPL plans to start mass production of these new panels in 2008. The company will also apply the same technology to other models to expand its lineup of slim border products.

LPL – Panel for Automobile Instrumentation
10.1” TFT LCD is used for cluster systems in vehicle applications with a free-form factor, high contrast ratio and wide viewing angle. Its shape can be adjusted to fit the instrument panel and gate driver ICs are integrated to improve package density. A higher contrast ratio is required for better visibility of information while driving. LPL improved the contrast ratio by modulation control of the white LED backlight in response to the displayed data. In addition, the gate driver ICs are integrated by adopting LTPS process.

NEC – TFT LCD Module Enables Control of Viewing Angle
NEC LCD Technologies Ltd announced the development of a color TFT LCD module that enables the viewing angle to be switched from wide to narrow in accordance with display contents, use and application of the LCD. NEC designed the LCD module using integrated TFT LCD (VIT) technology, along with the addition of a new viewing angle-switching control on the polarizer adjacent to the backlight system. The angle-switching control enables the light from the backlight system to be switched from a diffused pattern to a straight pattern by control signals. The LCD devices address two divergent needs: secure viewing of personal information achieved by a narrow angle mode, and broad viewing of public information realized by a wide angle mode. Various new technologies have been introduced to address this need; however, none fully enables the secure viewing of personal information while also allowing broad display of public information.

NEC – SR-NLT Technology
The SR-NLT technology features two display modes: transmissive mode that uses the backlight (B/L) as the light source and reflective mode which use ambient light as the light source. In an environment with low ambient light, images are displayed in the transmissive mode. In an environment with high ambient light, like outdoors in the daytime, it can turn the B/L off and display images in the reflective mode, which utilizes the ambient light.

Products Summary
Sharp has three LCD technologies: TFT LCD, STN LCD and CGS LCD. A variety of LCD technologies, such as ASV (Advanced Super View Angle) technologies which make high picture quality possible and mobile-use LCDs, are employed in various applications. Sharp exhibited an LCD panel with a built-in optical sensor, which was unveiled in August 2007. In this product, a photodiode is formed for each pixel by using the LCD panel production process. The diode is used to detect the changes in light intensity caused when the panel is touched. In this way, the product functions as a touch panel or a scanner. This mechanism is similar to the technology developed by Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co Ltd., although Sharp has implemented multi-touch and TMD has only implemented single touch. Sharp claims to have improved image recognition algorithms, thereby making it possible to use the panel in a various luminance conditions (0-100,000 lux).

TMD – 2.8” Wide QVGA Viewable Outdoor
The TMD prototype implements touch input by detecting light changes with the LTPS TFT photodiodes built into the pixels. Detected light sources include ambient lighting and the backlight. The technology was announced in 2003, and has been improving variation in sensitivity to external light. This product is intended for mobile gear, with a 2.8” design offering 320 x 240 pixels. Touch input was demonstrated for fingertip, light pen and other methods, and the system can also be used as a scanner.

TMD – Round LCD
This product can be made in any shape, such as triangle, oval, etc. In addition to the automotive application, the product can be used for portable devices and mobile phones. The panel is developed to form the pattern on the glass substrate on the regular LTPS TFT LCD production line. The glass substrate is cut into a circular shape at the final step of the production. The use efficiency of the glass substrate lowers, but "the cutting process is unexpectedly easy,” according to TMD. The latest panel features an RGB horizontal stripe array with 240 (H) x 240 (V) pixels (along the longest lines), a pixel pitch of 0.258 mm (W) x 0.258 mm (H), a luminance of 500 cd/m2 and a contrast ratio of 600:1. It is equipped with a side-light type backlight composed of a light guide panel combined with an LED mounted on the back side of the extraction electrode block located at the lower portion of the display module. The maximum module width is 11 mm including the backlight.

Thanks to the concentration of information displayed on the instrument panel, the product improves safety by reducing drivers' eye motion. It displays urgent information as needed, like speedometer, tachometer, navigation guides, vehicle-mounted camera image, caution indicators, and vehicle/engine condition.
