IV:阅读理解(共 15 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 30 分) 第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出最佳选项。 A Since 1989, Dave Thomas, who died at age 69, was one of the most recognizable faces on TV. He appeared in more than 800 commercials (商业广告) for the hamburger chain named for his daughter, “As long as it works ,” he said in 1991, “I’ll continue to do those commercials.” Even though he was successful, Thomas remained troubled by his childhood. “He still won’t let anyone see his feet, which are out of shape because he never had proper-fitting shoes,” Wendy said in 1993. Born to a single mother, he was adopted (收养) as a baby by Rex and Auleva Thomas of Kalamazoo in Michigan. After Auleva died when he was 5, Thomas spent years on the road as Rex traveled around seeking construction work. “He fed me,” Thomas said, “and if I got out of line, he’d beat me.” Moving out on his own at 15, Thomas worked, first as a waiter, in many restaurants. But he had something much better in mind. “I thought if I owned a restaurant,” he said, “I could eat for free.” A 1956 meeting with Harland Sanders led Thomas to a career as the manager of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that made him a millionaire in 1968. In 1969, after breaking with Sanders, Thomas started the first Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers, in Columbus, Ohio, which set itself apart by serving made-to-order burgers. With 6,000 restaurants worldwide, the chain now makes $ 6 billion a year in sales. Although troubled by his own experience with adoption, Thomas, married since 1954 to Lorraine, 66, and with four grown kids besides Wendy, felt it could offer a future for other children. He started the Dave Thomas Foundation (基金会) for Adoption in 1992. In 1993, Thomas, who had left school at 15, graduated from Coconut Greek High School in Florida. He even took Lorraine to the graduation dance party. The kids voted him Most Likely to Succeed.

Well, you’re not alone. Men and women in France are seeking relief using the world’s best medicine — laughter. In the past year more than 25 laughter clubs have been set up across the country. People of all ages go to release their stress with an hour of group laughs. “People telephoned me and said they have forgotten what it is to laugh. They want to find a place where they can escape all their problems for a while. So they come,” said 40-year-old Jocelyne Le Moan. She usually takes a class of around 60 people through a series of laughter techniques. Her pupils range from teenagers to 70 year olds, but most are middle-aged white collars seeking 60 minutes of relaxation at the end of a busy day. Le Moan takes them through the “lion laugh” and the “laugh contest”, where participants approach each other in different ways. And instead of talking, they break into fits of laughter. At the end there are 15 minutes of “meditation” (沉思), when they lie on their backs and let the laughs burst out of their mouths. “I love it. It’s an experience that has changed my life. Through it I rediscovered the child’s laugh inside me,” said Romain Jouffroy, 24. “US President George W. Bush should give it a try. He has lost his laugh,” she joked. Like Jouffroy, many laughter-club members find themselves changed into children again, and why not? The average preschooler laughs up to 400 times a day. The average adult only a sad 7 to 15. The physical benefits of laughter are already well-recognized. Doctors say the act of laughing releases good chemicals into the blood-stream, while the quick breathing that accompanies it helps massage (按摩) the digestive organs and strengthens the heart. “A full hour is like having your insides go jogging! One finishes out of breath, but feels revitalized (产生新的活力). And on top of that, you’ve had a laugh,” said doctor Alexis d’Estaing. And many participants in Paris also emphasize the psychological benefits. They believe that laughter is a way of making oneself feel more confident.

In France many people are too depressed to laugh. B. Many laughter clubs have been set up across France. C. Laughter clubs are the best place for people to get relief. D. People in France get relaxation through group laughs. C I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood. You may think people in such an attractive and exciting, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness. Many intelligent people still consider happiness equal to fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more lasting emotion. Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends. I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful individuals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells “happiness”. But in memoir (回忆录) after memoir, famous people expose the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun --- depression, alcoholism (酗酒), drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children and extreme loneliness. Ask an unmarried man why he refuses to get married even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he’s honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment (承诺). For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features. Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out whenever they want and sleep as late as they want. Couples with babies are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three-day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. The way people stick to the belief that a fun-filled, pain-free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever achieving real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness, then pain must be equal to unhappiness. As a result, they fear the pain unavoidably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment and self-improvement. But, in fact, the opposite is true. More times than not, things that lead to happiness involve some pain. The very efforts are the source of true happiness. Understanding and accepting that

First, write them out on a piece of paper. Then, make notes and practice saying them to yourself until you know them by heart. Now you’re ready to try them out on real people. The more you practice, the better they’ll get. It’s amazing as you watch other people listen to your funny story in another language and laugh in the right places! 62.__________________________ Phone up international hotels in towns where you live and make enquiries in English. Even if you live in a non-English speaking country, the reception staff will almost certainly speak English. This is a great way to practice your spoken English... and it’s free. Just invent a few questions to ask. You could do the same in shops (pretending to be a foreigner who only speaks English), but that’s a bit more difficult as you have to act the part too! 63.__________________________ Just go onto www.craigslist.com (or any other site with classified ads) and find someone who’s interested in learning a language (you speak your language, which the other person wants to learn; and they speak their language, which you want to learn). You can do this online or in person. You both get to practice the language you want to learn... for free. Plus, you’ll meet new and interesting people. 64.__________________________

Get together with some friends. You can get the scripts for just about any film or TV series from the internet. You could even try to learn your parts by heart, which would really help your English. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could put on a mini-show at your school or place of work. 65.__________________________ Have fun writing sentences on the computer and listening to them repeated back to you. Visit http://translate.google.com and type in words or expressions, or paste them in from another source. Then, click on the audio symbol and listen. For extra fun, type in funny sentences or words and listen to the computer lady read them back to you. A. Act it out B. Organize a language exchange C. Free conversations D. Story telling E. Computer settings F. Computer fun
