On Christmas Eve, 1992, Anthony had a heart transplant from a 21-year-old donor. Two days before Valentine's Day in 2002, Alfred received a 19-year-old heart, marking the first time on record that twin adults each received heart transplants. "I'm 15 minutes older than him, but now I'm younger because of my heart and I'm not going to respect him," Alfred said with a grin (露齿而笑), pointing to his brother while talking to a roomful of reporters, who laughed frequently at their jokes. While the twins knew that genetics might have played a role in their condition, they recognized that their eating habits might have also contributed to their heart problems. "We'd put half a pound of butter on a steak. I overdid it on all the food that tasted good, so I guess I deserved what I got for not dieting properly." The discussion moved to Anthony's recovery. In the five years since his heart transplant, he had been on an exercise program where he regularly rode a bicycle for five miles, swam each day, and walked a couple of miles. He was still on medication, but not nearly as much as Alfred, who was just in the early stage of his recovery. "Right now I feel pretty young and I'm doing very well," Anthony said. "I feel like a new person." Alfred said his goal, of course, was to feel even better than his brother. But, he added, "I love my brother very much. We're very close and I'm sure we'll do just fine." 41.This article is mainly about ________. A.the danger of heart transplant surgery B.becoming young by getting a new heart C.the effect of genetics on the heart D.the twin brothers who received heart transplants 42.What did Alfred and Anthony think caused their heart problems? A.Exercise. B.Diet. C.Surgery. D.Medicines. 43.Why did Alfred say, "I'm 15 minutes older than him, but now I'm younger because of my heart"? A.His heart transplant surgery was more successful than Anthony's. B.His recovery from the heart surgery was faster than Anthony's. C.His exercise program was better than Anthony's. D.His new heart was younger than Anthony's. B "A good parent" can be a confusing phrase. It is almost impossible for one person to be "a good parent" at all stages of a child's life. Some parents are at their best before their children begin to speak. Others are most successful before their children enter elementary school. Still others make their finest contribution to older children or teenagers. Every parent can understand

one stage of a child's development better than another. It is a rare person who possesses superior capacities (能力) throughout the entire period of a child's growth. A mother might be "a good parent" from her baby's birth until it is three; that is the period when it needs her protection and loving care. Then the start of her child's independence might upset and alarm her, and she might then become less helpful for a few years. A father might be awkward and uncomfortable with a younger child, but could turn into an excellent parent when the child is old enough to be taught the skills of cycling, fishing and so on, or to be taken on trips. Some parents feel easier with boys, and others with girls—and then only at certain ages or stages. It is important for parents to understand and accept their own limitations in these matters, just as they must accept the child's faults of personality and limitations of talent. Otherwise, fathers and mothers will feel guilty and blame themselves for weaknesses that may not be their faults. Much of the guilt experienced by modern parents comes from the mistaken feeling that they ought to be all things at all times to the child, which is clearly mistaken. In past ages, grandparents and uncles and aunts lived with the family, and provided different kinds of support; in our present "nuclear" family, too many roles are demanded of the two parents, which they cannot possibly fulfill. 44.Confusion arises about what it means to be "a good parent" because ________. A.it is normal to be a successful parent during most of a child's development B.most parents are only good at helping older children or teenagers C.parents are usually at their best before their children go to school D.parents do not realize they cannot perform equally well through a child's growth 45.If we consider the relative values of mothers and fathers, it is clear that ________. A.either parent may be effective with children at some stage B.only fathers can teach cycling, fishing and so on C.only mothers can succeed with very small children D.parents are better with children of their own sex 46.Parents of nuclear families sometimes feel at a loss because ________. A.they believe that such a family prevents the healthy growth of a child's personality and talent B.they dislike the support that other family members give to their children C.they do not always have the help of other family members in child-raising D.they no longer regard grandparents, uncles and aunts as good educators of their children C Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer." The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U. S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer (自由撰稿人) , I had no hope at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a real writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn't gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so

hard to sell a story that I barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn't going to be one of those people who die wondering, what if? I would keep putting my dream to the test — even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadow land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there. 47.The passage is meant to ________. A.warn young people of the difficulties that a successful writer has to experience B.advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer C.show young people it's unrealistic for a writer to seek wealth and fame D.encourage young people to enter on a writing career 48.Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career? A.Genuine writers often find their work interesting and rewarding. B.A writer's success depends on luck rather than on effort. C.Famous writers usually live poorly and alone. D.The chances for a writer to become successful are small. 第二节:(共 5 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。 The day my husband fell to his death, it started to snow, just like any November day, just like the bottom hadn't fallen out of my world when he fell off the roof. 51 It snowed almost every day for the next four months, while I sat on the couch and watched it pile up. One morning, I dragged my feet downstairs and was surprised to see a woman clearing my driveway. I dropped to my knees, crawled through the living room, and back upstairs so those good Samaritans (乐善 好施的人) would not see me. I was embarrassed. 52 I didn't have the strength to brush my hair let alone clear someone's walk. 53 I defined myself by my competence and independence. So who was I if I was no longer capable and busy? How could I respect myself if all I did was sit on the couch everyday and watch the snow fall? 54 Friends cooked for me and I cried because I couldn't even help them set the table. "I'm not usually this lazy," I cried. Finally, my friend Kathy sat down with me and said, "Mary, cooking for you is not a chore (杂物活) . I love you and I want to do it. It makes me feel good to be able to do something for you." Over and over, I heard similar sentiments (情感) from the people who supported me during those dark days. One very wise man told me, "You are not doing nothing. Being fully open to your grief may be the hardest work you will ever do." 55 . My life is now filled with gratitude and modesty. I have been surprised to learn that

第一部分 阅读表达(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求回答问题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。 Every winter, at least in cold climates, people sink into an all-too-familiar round of illness, with sneezing, sore throat, and stuffed-up head, a few of the most common symptoms. Sometimes other conditions, such as a severe cough, are also present, and people wonder whether they have simply caught a cold or are suffering from flu. Since the two illnesses have several common characteristics, the confusion is understandable. Colds are generally rather mild annoyances, but flu can be quite serious and lead to pneumonia (肺炎). So it is wise to be aware of the differences. Sneezing, stuffy nose, and sore throat are the most common symptoms of colds, and they are often, but not always, present with flu as well. Chest discomfort and coughing may also accompany both illnesses, but in flu they have bronchitis (支气管炎) that may last for weeks afterward. The symptoms particularly distinguishing flu, which are rarely if ever present with the common cold, are headache, high fever, aches and pains all over the body, a general weakness, and exhaustion. Often the illness begins with vague body pains and headache, then quickly worsens as the victim's bodily temperature rises and extreme fatigue (乏力) sets in. Suffers may find themselves in bed for several days, sleeping much of the time and battling temperatures of 102-104 degrees. Waking moments may be spent coughing uncontrollably. Though there is presently no cure for the common cold, antibiotics can resist certain types of flu. And getting a flu shot at the beginning of each season is a particularly good idea. 6.What is the title for this passage? (within 5 words) ____________________________________________________________________________ 7.Why do people often confuse colds with flu? (within 10 words) ____________________________________________________________________________ 8.Which illness can cause victims to suffer more? Colds or flu? Why? (within 15 words)

But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels. An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past. "We were surprised by just how positive today's young people seem to be about their families," said one member of the research team. "They're expected to be rebellious (叛逆的) and selfish, but actually they have other things on their minds: they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There's more negotiation and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don't want to rock the boat." So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. "My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me," says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. "I always tell them when I'm going out clubbing. As long as they know what I'm doing, they're fine with it." Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees." Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation.

For example, as long as I'd done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that. " Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A researcher comments, "Our surprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to taking it over." 26.What is the popular image of teenagers today? A.They worry about school. B.They dislike living with their parents. C.They have to be locked in to avoid troubles. D.They quarrel a lot with other family members. 27.The study shows that teenagers don't want to ________. A.share family responsibility B.cause trouble in their families C.go boating with their family D.make family decisions 28.Compared with parents of 30 years ago, today's parents ________. A.go to clubs more often with their children B.are much stricter with their children C.care less about their children's life D.give their children more freedom 29.According to the author, teenage rebellion ________. A.may be a false belief B.is common nowadays C.existed only in the 1960s D.resulted from changes in families 30.What is the passage mainly about? A.Negotiation in family. B.Education in family. When you're finished, may I see it? W: I'll give it to you right now. I have to check on dinner anyway. Text 2 W: Have Lisa and Eric started a family yet? They've been married for two years now. M: Eric told me that they'd put off having children until he got his Dr's degree. Text 3 M: I'd like four rolls, a pound of biscuits, and that birthday cake. W: Do you want the cake delivered? Text 4 M: I hope that the post office will be open now. W: The sign says: 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. weekdays, 9 a. m. to 12 noon Saturdays. Text 5 W: You Americans are funny! It seems as if you were married to your cars. M: Yeah, I guess that's true. The country is becoming one big highway. I was reading that there are about 4 million roads and highways in this country now. Text 6 M: Where have you been these days? W: In the hospital. M: In the hospital? What happened? W: Didn't you know that our room caught fire last Sunday evening? M: Oh, really? I'm sorry to hear that. But what caused the fire? W: Well, the light in our room was turned off at 10:30 as usual. Ann lit a candle to go on reading. Unluckily she fell asleep with the candle still burning beside her. Then her bed caught fire. M: Oh, my God! I'm sorry to hear that. And how was Ann? W: She was badly burnt and is still in hospital. M: Was she the only one burnt? W: No. There were two more, including me. M: I think you should be more careful in the future. W: We will. Text 7 M: Hi, Alice. Why have you come to school an hour early? W: I wanted to get a front row seat and review one more time before the test. Why are you here so early, Mark? M: I get out of my car here this time every day. You seem to be nervous about your lessons. Have you finished your review? W: I've only been studying night and day for the last week. If I don't get an A in this class, I won't get the support of my country. Why do you seem so calm? M: This class is really just a review for me. I've been learning it for two years.

W: That's lucky for you. M: Can you guess what the test will be like? Will it be difficult? W: I hope not. But I'm still worried about it. M: Well, cheer up. Hope for good luck. Text 8 M: Are you feeling OK, Jane? You look pretty tired. W: My sister and I had a birthday party for my brother last night. I didn't get much sleep. M: Where did you have the party? W: It was at my aunt's house. Then, right after the party, I had to start typing a history paper that was due first thing in the morning. I was kind of nervous because the professor said he wouldn't accept any late papers. M: I don't know how you managed it. I can't handle a pressure situation like that. W: Well, I just turned the paper in and now I'm going home to bed. See you later. Text 9 W: Hi, Steve, how are things? M: Hi, Maggie. Good, thanks. What's new with you? W: I was just wondering if you wanted to go out tonight. M: Well, I was thinking of doing some work, to work on my paper which is due next week. What have you gotten in mind? W: I thought we could just go for a walk, maybe down to that park near the beach. M: Tonight. You must be joking. It's so cold. W: Oh, yes, it's too cold. Oh, that new Tom Cruise's film is on in town. How about that? M: OK. What time does it start? W: Oh, I think it's half past eight or something. I'll just get the paper and have a look. M: Then, where are we going to meet? W: It'd be easier if we met up at the cinema. M: OK. Text 10 If you are in a western country, you will often see people walking their dogs. It is true that a dog is the most useful animal in the world. However, the reason why one keeps a dog has changed. Once upon a time, a man met a dog and wanted it to help him in the fight against other animals, and the dog listened to him and did what he told him to do. Later people used dogs for hunting other animals, and dogs did not eat what they got until their masters agreed. Dogs were also used for driving sheep and guarding chickens. But now people in towns and cities do not need dogs to fight other animals any more. Of course, they keep them to frighten thieves, but the most important reason for keeping dogs is that they feel lonely in the city. For a child, a dog is his best friend when he has no friends to play with. For a young wife, a dog is her child when she does not have her own. For old people, a dog is also a child when their real children have grown up and left. Now, people do not have to use a dog, but they keep it as a friend just like a member of the family.
