The first 6,000 copies of the book were sold out in a week. And the book has inspired many plays and movies. The first play was put on in 1844.The first two movies were silent

films made in 1901 and 1908.Since then, the story has been remade more than 60 times for television and cinema. What makes such a tale so appealing? Audiences have always loved a good plot, a villain (反面人物) who harms other people or breaks the law,and the ending of right over wrong. The book offers all three. The book tells the story of a man named Ebenezer Scrooge. He is mean and cruel to his clerk and turns away his only living relative. One night, Scrooge is visited by three spirits. The first reveals scenes from Scrooge's youth that led to this current state. The second takes him to the homes of his clerk and his nephew. Here Scrooge sees that people can be happy without lots of money. The spirit also shows him the desperate poor people of London. The final spirit shows Scrooge will die alone, and no one will care if he continues to live as he has. At last the message is understood, and Scrooge_repents. He becomes generous and caring to all around him, especially to his clerk's sick son, Tiny Tim. Every year, thousands of people watch A Christmas Carol again. Why? They may be touched by its lessons on the true meanings of wealth and happiness. They may enjoy the special effects and feelings or watching every year may be just a habit. Viewers never seem to grow tired of the old miser, Scrooge, and his dramatic message of hope and change. 文章大意:本文是记叙文。文章讲述了查尔斯· 狄更斯的《圣诞颂 歌》的写作背景及其主要情节。 56.What do we know about the book A Christmas Carol? Chinese writer Mo Yan's Nobel Prize for Literature might ignite an explosion of global interest in Chinese literature and lead to more titles translated into English, European experts say.

“Hopefully, the award means more people will read Chinese literature and more works will get translated,” says Michel Hockx, professor of the Languages and Cultures of China and Inner Asia from University of London. “Many very good Chinese writers have been accepted globally for a long time already. Mo Yan is probably the most translated Chinese writer alive, with at least five of his novels made available in English over the past 20 years.” Jonathan Ruppin, web editor of bookseller Foyles, says Mo's win coincides with growing interest in Chinese literature and recognizes the talents of a distinctive and visionary(富于幻想的)writer. “We are very excited by the fact that English translations of more of his books should now become available,” Ruppin says. He made the comment after Mo became the first Chinese citizen to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in its centurylong history. As EastWest cultural exchange has been booming, Chinese literature has been attracting growing attention in recent years. Hockx explains, “It's mainly because there are many more opportunities for Chinese writers to visit other countries, to publish their works outside China and to interact with readers abroad. At the

same time, more and more people globally are learning Chinese and taking an interest in the Chinese language and culture.” University of Oxford lecturer in modern Chinese literature Margaret Hillenbrand says, “The obvious reason for the growing global presence of Chinese literature is the growing global presence of China itself. People have come to realize that there is a serious knowledge deficit ( 缺 少 )between China and its international counterparts—in particular, China_knows_incomparably(无比地) more_about_Europe_and_America_than_the_other_way_round—an d reading Chinese literature is an effective, simple means of solving that gap.” 文章大意:莫言获得诺贝尔文学奖引起了人们对中国文学的兴 趣。本文解释了中国文学在西方引起关注的原因和意义。 59. underlined word “ignite” in Paragraph 1 probably means The “________”. C (2013· 西城区期末) Breaking the Code One school night this month I walked quietly up to Alexander, my 15year- son, and touched his cheek gently in a manner I hoped old would seem casual.A year ago he would have ignored this disturbance but now he reacted impatiently and leaned back to his computer screen. I made a mistake: breaking into my teenager's personal space. “The average teenager has pretty strong feelings about his privacy,” Lara Fox and her friend Hilary Frankel told me. Mr. Frankel and Mr. Fox, both 17, are the authors of Breaking the Code, a new book that seeks to bridge the generational divide between parents and adolescents. It is being promoted by its publisher as the first self?help guide by teenagers for their parents, a kind of “Kids Are From Mars, Parents Are From Venus” that explains the language and actions of teenagers. The girls dealt with issues including hanging out late, money, school pressures, smoking etc. Personally, I welcome their opinions. The most common missteps in interacting with teenagers arise from the war between parents exercising their rights to know what goes on under their roof and teenagers firmly guarding their privacy.Teenagers can be quick to interpret their parents' remarks and respond with anger that masks their vulnerability (脆弱 ). Ms. Fox said, “What we want above all is your approval.Don't forget, no matter how much we act as if we don't care what you say, we believe the things you say about us.” Nancy, a New York childraising expert said she didn't agree with everything the authors suggested but found their arguments

reasonable.“When your kids are saying, ‘You_don't_get_it,_and_ you_never_will,’ there are lots of ways to respond so that they will listen and that is what the writers point out.” “My parents helped me see that,” Mr. Fox told me, “even though they used to stay out late and ride their bicycles to school, times have changed and the way parents educate children is different. These days there is a major fear factor in bringing up kids.Parents worry about their child crossing the street.” The writers said they hoped simply to throw light on teenage thinking. 文章大意: 本文介绍了一本书 Breaking the Code 以及人们对该书 的评价。 63. Most magazines, whether online or print, will include book reviews about books that tackle the topics the magazine discusses. Also, most editors and staff writers are usually too busy to read books and review them themselves (unless they are specifically assigned to a book review column). Therefore, writing book reviews can be a great way to get started with a writing career. Many people that are reading your review may not know

anything about the book you're reviewing. So start out with a little description of the book, but avoid too long of a summary. Otherwise, it won't be interesting. Start with a short paragraph or so that hits all the major points but doesn't give too much away. You don't want to tell your reader everything about the book, because then they won't have to read it at all. Just give enough information so your reader is interested in reading the book. Some magazines like to publish book reviews that are completely objective(客观的). This means that they want a review of the book that doesn't share your opinion and that in which your opinion isn't obvious from reading what you wrote. You should not include your personal reaction to the book until the very end, where you include a sentence or two about whether or not you would recommend a book and to whom you would recommend it. A great way to get your review noticed is to look at a book through a specific angle. Read the book as a feminist(女权主义者) would, for example, and talk about what a feminist might say to applaud or criticize the book. You can choose any number of angles, and feminism is just one option. An economic angle, a family angle, the angle of a different nationality, or the angle of a child could all be interesting ways to look at a book. Feminist magazines love book reviews about books read through a feminist angle, for example, because it relates to their readership. Another great way to write a book review is to talk about the writer's style. Anyone can pick up a book and read for the plot, but it takes an experienced writer to note interesting things about another writer's style and write about them intelligently. 文章大意:写书评有很多好处,那么如何写好书评呢?本文给出

The ________. A.giving examples B.telling personal experiences C.making comparisons D.analyzing causes 答案:A 细节理解题。由第四段内容可知,全是举例例证。 70 . Far enough to find out your possibility of dying from a terrible disease? These days that's more than an academic question, as Tracy Smith reports in our Cover Story. There are now more than a thousand genetic(基因的)tests, for everything from baldness to breast cancer, and the list is growing. Question is, do you really want to know what might eventually kill you? For instance, Nobel Prizewinning scientist James Watson, one of the first people to map their entire genetic makeup, is said to have asked not to be told if he were at a higher risk for Alzheimer's(老年痴 呆症). “If I tell you that you have an increased risk of getting a terrible disease, that could weigh on your mind and make you anxious, through which you see the rest of your life as you wait for that disease to hit you. It could really mess you up.” Said Dr. Robert Green, a Harvard geneticist.

“Every ache and pain,” Smith suggested, could be understood as “the beginning of the end.”“That 's right. If you ever worried you were at risk for Alzheimer's disease, then every time you can't find your car in the parking lot, you think the disease has started.” Dr. Green has been thinking about this issue for years. He led a study of people who wanted to know if they were at a higher genetic risk for Alzheimer's. It was thought that people who got bad news would, for lack of a better medical term, freak_out. But Green and his team found that there was“no significant difference”between how people handled good news and possibly the worst news of their lives. In fact, most people think they can handle it. People who ask for the information usually can handle the information, good or bad, said Green. 文章大意:基因技术的进步可以让我们很早就知道我们可能患什 么病,那么你愿意知道吗? 71.The first paragraph is meant to ________.
