I like watching butterflies. Sometimes I think I’m the only girl who notices these quiet but beautiful things. But if it hadn’t been for a crowded restaurant, I wouldn’t have ever noticed Valeri. Valeri was a new student. She walked to class with her books against her chest(胸 口) and her head down. She talked only when the teacher asked her a question. After a month at our school, she hadn’t made any friend. One day at lunch, most tables being full, I had nowhere to sit. Valeri sat alone, book in hand. I walked over to her, “Is that a good book?” Valeri gave a small nod and went back to reading. “What’s it about?” I asked. After seconds of silence, she looked at me, her eyes shining, “Well, it’s about a dragon（龙）! This boy, Eragon, finds this dragon egg when he goes playing one day. He thinks it’s a rock! The egg hatches （孵 化）and Eragon hides the dragon from his cousin and uncle until it gets too big .” Two weeks later, I was sitting in the auditorium（礼堂）enjoying the talent(才艺) show. Then a shy girl walked on stage(舞台). I recognized her immediately. Valeri held a violin in one hand and a bow in the other. She started to play. The notes formed a soft, sweet tune(曲调). The auditorium(礼堂) fell completely silent until we realized the music was finished. I smiled to myself. Valeri wasn’t just “a quiet girl”. Knowledge is power(力量). But there is one other thing that we must remember. A strong mind needs a strong body in order to make it useful. There are a great many good exercises. They are helpful and healthful. Many of them may be taken indoors during rainy weather. Indoor exercises, however, are never as helpful as those taken out of doors in pure(纯的), fresh air. It is because in fresh air more oxygen(氧气) is taken into our body systems(体系) and more wastes are given off. The air in the house does not remain fresh very long. But out of doors it is usually fresh and pure. But what shall we play? There are a number of games such as football, basketball, races.…. Any game with plenty of movement is good. The best are those which are played out of doors. Do not neglect(忽视) your body. It is of as much importance as your mind. Our country now needs men with strong minds, good judgment (判断力) and healthy bodies. 25. What does the writer want to tell us in the first paragraph? A. We must keep healthy in order that our knowledge will be in full use. B. We must remember knowledge is power. C. We must not forget to make greater use of our knowledge. D. We must keep healthy in order to make games more useful. 26. From the passage we know that when it is raining , . There’s a body of water in Israel that is actually below sea level. Water constantly
（不断地） runs into it, but, because of the law of gravity (万有引力定律)，nothing can
flow out of it. Do you know the name of this famous lake? It’s called the Dead Sea. It’s called this because no living thing could live there. The water is almost dead, compared to what happens with “living water”. When you think of the term “living water”, the picutre that comes to mind is a rushing river that is flowing. It’s filled with life and movement. It doesn’t just “receive”, but is also “giving” at the same time. Many of us believe that we need to receive more of something in order to be happy. Whether what we desire（渴望） is money or something else, we think we need more of it in order to be fulfilled. As a result, we begin to operate in fear and therefore don’t give anything because we’re afraid that we won’t have enough. The result? Like the Dead Sea, we become lifeless. Life is meant to flow. when a pool stops flowing, it becomes stagnant(停滞的). Stagnant water cause disease and death. It can’t breathe. It can’t receive any more. If nothing is flowing out, there’s no room for anything else to come in. The solution（解决的方法）? Give. As you give, you’ll receive. It’s a universal(通 用的) law. You see it at work everywhere. we’ve somehow been deceived(欺骗) into believing that if we don’t give, we’ll have more. Or we’re afraid that if we do give, we won’t have anything left. On one hand, this seems to make sense. But it doesn’t work. Because when we don’t give, we shut off the flow of what’s coming in. 29. What is the first paragraph mainly about? A. The development of the Dead Sea B. The special character(特点) of the Dead Sea C. The position of the Dead Sea D. The present situation of the Dead Sea 30. According to the passage, people wouldn’t like to give because ________. A. they are really poor in fact B. they don’t know how to give C. they don’t know who to give D. they are still not satisfied 31. According to the passage, if you refuse to give, you will ________. A. be like a pool with stagnant water B. have enough space for what you’ll receive C. need something more to be satisfied D. do everything according to the law 32. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Give and you’ll receive B. The secret of the Dead sea C. A universal law D. come in and come out

Then, it also helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible. Besides, it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because by doing so you’ll learn and remember Chinese words more easily. You can also make more Chinese friends. They will tell you a lot about China and help you learn Chinese. Try and write to me in Chinese next time. Best wishes. Yours, Li Hua
